ARTS IN ACTION PROJECT
Luminarium's Arts in Action Project offers youth within the Boston area the opportunity to grow through dance and the arts.
Luminarium Dance Company’s 2021 Arts in Action Project will take place on December 5 & 19 at Dedham's Mother Brook Arts & Community Center, and we want YOU to attend.
Inspired by the methodology of recent production Contradictions + Casual Self Loathing, participants will dip their toes into movement-based storytelling through a combination of writing exercises and exploring physicality. We will use play to lessen fear of movement, explore our own stories, and create independently and together. Absolutely no dance experience is required, the workshops are for all.
December 5: Ages 10-15
December 19: Ages 16+, Adults
Workshops are 10-11am. Participants should come in comfortable clothes they can move in and a mask, and bring a notebook and writing utensil. Space is limited so we can keep Covid-safe.

Luminarium's Arts in Action Project brings professional performing arts experience directly to local youth. Completed annually, the company designs a series of workshops appropriate for Boston's youth participants. These programs not only include dance technique classes (ranging from modern to hip-hop to classical Indian dance), but also includes in-depth workshops in production and choreographic composition.
Our inaugural 2011 project brought courses in dance, choreography, costume construction, and sound design to members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston. The project culminated in a concert in which youth participants performed alongside Luminarium's professional company members in a well-received public performance entitled LEAP: Leading & Engaging Artistic Pursuits.
In 2013, the company worked with teens from the South Boston Community Health Center's 'Young at Arts' program. After months of classes in many styles of dance and composition workshops, during which teens were given the chance to create movement of their own, Luminarium put on a local show for the youth of South Boston to enjoy.
For 2014, Luminarium was proud to announce its brand new DANCE+ Series, offering an engaging, family-friendly class each Saturday morning in the April of 2014 that explored weekly themes of dance intersecting other fields: Technology, Science, Music, and Light. Each class (still in the company's rotation, and available to be brought to your own organization) is strongly movement based, while led by an expert teacher from outside the world of dance.
From 2015-18, we have been fortunate enough to bring an ever-changing annual class series to such incredible organizations as OUT MetroWest and the Italian Home for Children, and with youth in the neighborhoods of Somerville, Cambridge, Roslindale, Hyde Park, Mattapan and Jamaica Plain.
In recent years we have worked with youth service organizations to determine what their participants need. For OUT MetroWest we brought storytelling and self-expression composition workshops to our youth participants to find ways to share and celebrate their stories and life experiences. At Italian Home for Children, we worked with dance as a tool for escape and joy through a series of dance classes and choreography workshops. We are thrilled to find ways to use dance as a tool for healing, joy, and development.

Luminarium Director Kimberleigh A. Holman leads this annual project. After many years of work in performing arts programming, Holman decided to bring her vast experience in community-based arts projects to Luminarium, to make a difference through art in the lives of local youth.
