"dance at its boldest"

METROWEST DAILY NEWS

This November, venture through Portal, Luminarium’s newest feature production, igniting the company’s signature imaginative choreography and theatricality. Portal is an evening of vibrant storytelling and experience that provides entry to five unique worlds of dance. Created by Artistic Directors Merli V. Guerra and Kimberleigh A. Holman, the five stand-alone new works will have audiences jumping down the proverbial rabbit hole, exploring metaphor and labyrinth, examining and observing the inconsistencies of human relationship, and wandering through the pages of history. Cap off the evening by reveling in the excitement of the company’s recent world premiere at the Boston Opera House. Originally commissioned by TEDxCambridge to open the largest TED event in the world this past June, this vigorous and dynamic octet will be shown for the last time in its current state, as the climactic pinnacle of Luminarium’s 2016 Season.

Portal boasts a strong musical presence as well. For its TEDxCambridge piece, Guerra and Holman collaborated with composer Christos Zevos to create a work that provides both environment and electronic drive. Accompanying rabbit hole cycles is a composition of performer sounds, manipulated rehearsal recordings, and toy piano, crafted from scratch by Holman. For the history piece, Guerra collaborated with singer/song-writer Mali Sastri of the Boston-based band Jaggery to create a piece for voice and cello which will be performed live at this production.
