CHOREOFEST 2020

A NEW APPROACH

Luminarium Dance Company & Monkeyhouse were thrilled to produce the seventh 24-Hour ChoreoFest in May of 2020! The original micro-residency was created from curiosity in what would happen if we brought choreographers together for an intensely focused amount of time overnight to do what we do best—create. Our new goal in sustaining this festival during COVID-19 was to not only offer an opportunity for dancemakers to unite through a shared digital experience (as we all felt so isolated), but also to provide a means of financial sustenance to artists while we being quarantined and unable to work from home.

The 2020 virtual festival took place in four phases with a different regional festival on each Saturday in May—Malden (May 9), Greater Boston (May 16), Tri-State (May 23), and National (May 30). Each of the Saturday ChoreoFests consisted of a 6-hour creation period, interviews, and a culminating virtual performance at the end of the day (all of which were viewable to the public online).

This fund goes directly towards future iterations of Luminarium's 24-Hour ChoreoFest, co-produced by Monkeyhouse.

Specifically, all funds received through the donation box to the right go towards paying the choreographers involved in future ChoreoFest events.

This year's choreographers were paid thanks to support from Monkeyhouse's Covid Collaborations sponsored by the Miner Nagy Family Gift Fund. The Malden ChoreoFest program is supported in part by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

We thank you for your help in sustaining artists!

Welcome

WHAT IS CHOREOFEST?

Luminarium pioneers this unique annual festival, in which five dance companies join Luminarium in locking themselves inside the famous Dance Complex overnight to create new work for a performance the following evening. Viewers are encouraged to watch the process unfold via live stream online throughout the 24-hour period.

It needs to be supported, hands down . . . People like the mayor, people from the white housethese important people need to be here to see how creative [Luminarium's ChoreoFest] is here in Boston.
